Working with federal and local partners, AEA is supporting interties and power line extensions in Skagway, Hydaburg, Hollis, and the Parks Highway locations. Alaska Power Company's (APC) Prince of Wales Island Intertie, scheduled for completion this year, will save communities over $160,000 per year in diesel fuel by extending the Island's hydroelectric grid to communities powered by diesel. In summer 2005, APC completed an intertie between Alatna and Allakaket. Drilled beneath the Koyukuk River, the project replaces an overhead connection subject to periodic washout and replacement.
