A 2008 policy report conducted at the request of the Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) and the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) recommended a comprehensive public awareness campaign, among other things, be undertaken to improve energy efficiency and conservation in Alaska.
AEA has initiated a broad spectrum, collaborative Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EE&C) education and outreach campaign with the understanding this is a vital component of ensuring a long-term, stable energy supply for Alaskans. In December 2011, a follow-up report titled Recommendations for Alaska Energy Efficiency and Conservation Public Education and Outreach was published that included precise recommendations for launching an effective comprehensive, statewide EE&C public education campaign.
At the center of AEA’s energy efficiency and conservation outreach efforts is the Alaska Energy Efficiency Partnership (AEEP). This stakeholder group consists of over 50 public, private, and non-profit entities from around Alaska working together toward a shared vision of Alaska someday becoming the most energy-efficient state in the nation. The Alaska Energy Efficiency Leadership Awards are an initiative of AEEP and is intended to recognize individuals and organizations successfully making strides toward the AEEP’s mission of Alaska someday becoming the most energy-efficient state in the nation. Two awards are given annually, one each for an individual and an organization. The awards must be for different projects. Anyone in Alaska can submit nominations. The AEEP Award Committee will review and score nominations, selecting the top three in both categories for review and selection by the full AEEP. To nominate an individual or an organization please complete the application and submit it to efficiency@akenergyauthority.org.
AEEP hosted a website akenergyefficiency.org. Due to budget constraints, however, the website is no longer maintained, but a majority of the useful tips and resources can be found here.
The Alaska Resource Education (ARE), with support from AEA, is offering a one-credit energy class to educators through the University of Alaska. This course is designed to provide educators with tools to teach about energy in Alaska through interactive curriculum and hands-on activities, and introduce advanced topics in energy, economics, and careers.
