Permitting and final designs are underway for a new run-of-river hydroelectric project on Fivemile Creek to benefit the community of Chitina. The high head system will include a diversion/intake structure, a penstock with about 1,000 ft. elevation drop over a length of 10,000 linear feet to a powerhouse with 300 kW installed capacity. The facility will tie into the existing grid and is expected to generate about 2,000 MWh/yr.

This hydroelectric system will be owned and operated by Chitina Electric, Inc. and will displace ~62,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year.
