Inside Passage Electric Cooperative, Inc. (IPEC) is constructing a hydroelectric project (run-of-river) at Gartina Falls, located 2.5 miles southeast of the Hoonah Airport. A diversion dam and intake structure will be constructed above the falls. The project also includes the construction of a steel penstock, an access road, and a powerhouse at the base of the falls. The system will have a 455 kW capacity and is expected to generate over 1,810 MWh annually.

This hydroelectric power will replace 30% of Hoonah’s diesel-powered electricity, and will help reduce electric rates for all five communities served by IPEC: Hoonah, Kake, Chilkat Valley, Angoon, and Klukwan.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.
