Energy data can require a level of skill, knowledge, and time to interpret that not everyone may have. To help the public interpret energy data, AEA has developed data visualizations and dashboards. The visualizations include numerous charts, graphs, and tables to guide users to better understand the available data. If you find errors, have recommendations for improvements to the visualizations included below, or have a request for additional data, please contact AEA.
Alaska Energy Data Gateway – The Alaska Energy Data Gateway has been funded by grants from the Alaska Energy Authority as well as the U.S. Department of Energy’s EPSCoR program and Grid Modernization Initiative. This site provides the public with comprehensive energy data and selected socioeconomic data from across the state including electric utility generation, sales, and rate data, renewable energy project performance, and heating fuel costs. AEA no longer supports or updates this site. The data may be out of date.
DCRA Community Database Online – The Community Database Online (CDO) is a portal for information about Alaska communities. Data is available by individual communities or by complete dataset. The CDO includes a diverse array of socioeconomic, cultural, government, demographic, transportation, and other datasets that can be important inputs for community planning. Some of AEA’s geospatial data is available on the CDO here. Regulatory Commission of Alaska – People interested in doing a deep dive into Alaska’s utilities should access the Regulatory Commission of Alaska (RCA). The RCA Library includes all communications with all electric utilities that are either economically regulated and/or participants in the Power Cost Equalization program. Although communications are only available through pdf files, the RCA is the best source of financial data for Alaska’s electric utilities. U.S. Energy Information Administration – Additional utility information is available from select utilities that are required to report to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). While most of Alaska’s small, rural utilities do not report to the EIA, Alaska’s larger utilities, industrial operators, and independent power producers (IPPs) report a wide array of generation, sales, infrastructure, and revenue data available through Microsoft Excel files. Renewable Energy Data (Biomass, Hydro, Solar, and Wind) – Please see AEA’s program webpages for data and links. Geothermal Site Exploration – Aside from AEA-funded geothermal exploration projects, the Alaska Department of Natural Resources Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys has performed most of the geothermal exploration studies in the state.
